A New Vancouver Island Big Year Record: 
Without originally setting out to, 2024 became by far and away the birdiest year of my life as I set out to break Ann Nightingale’s 2015 Big Year record for Vancouver Island. From Port Hardy to Port Renfrew, Ucluelet to Comox I racked up some great birds, made some amazing friends, worked alongside numerous dedicated stewardship communities, and put more kms on my car than I care to admit. The record is nothing but a number, but each species making up that number is a story. Come hear some of those stories from someone who has had the privilege to get to know this island and its birdwatching communities.
