Birding Ethiopia

Presenter: Tom Plath

Ethiopia is a major endemic center, an important migratory corridor for Palearctic migrants and holds an excellent array of mammals. Tom Plath has visited this country twice and using his photos will introduce you to the birds, birding places and wildlife of this unique part of Africa.

Tom’s love for natural history began early and by his teens had participated on numerous bird inventory projects. Sharing his passion with others, he was given the VNHS (Nature Vancouver) Garibaldi Award for outstanding service in 1993. His passion led him to a position with Province as a Non-game Wildlife Specialist for the Lower Mainland Region.

Following downsizing in 2003 he started consulting working on numerous wildlife-related projects in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and the Yukon; and on a variety of taxon “from snails to whales” and including Species at Risk.

Tom enjoys passing his knowledge to others and has led over 200 birding field trips for Nature Vancouver and other natural history groups, participated on over 150 Christmas Bird Counts and on several “citizen science” projects for Bird Studies Canada. In 2010 he created Satipo Tours organizing and leading birding tours in South America and Africa.
